Portobello Market, Saturday 7th January — cancelled

Our apologies but we have had to cancel the market that was due to be held this coming Saturday, 7th January. Unfortunately the number of stallholders who confirmed attendance are not enough to make running the market this month viable, and those who were unable to attend include our main sellers of basics like veg, bread, meat and fish. The main reason they are unable to come along is lack of stock, so on the plus side perhaps they have all been selling well over the festive period.

Once again we can only apologise, please note the next market will be held on 4th February.

With best wishes,

PEDAL

Blasda film screenings and picnic at 1st Anniversary of Portobello Organic Market

Saturday 3rd of September will be the first anniversary of Porty Organic Market. To celebrate, PEDAL have a great programme of fund food related events to serve up at Brighton Park!

In association with Take One Action and Woodcraft folk, we’ll kick off at 10.30 with a programme of short films on local food.  Hear about the future of farming, about how to keep chickens in your backyard and about how local communities are growing their own all over the UK.  Try out the cycle-powered ‘Guerilla Cinema’ in our lovely yurt — and make your own energy in the Powerpod.

At 12.30 we’re inviting you to join us in a local food picnic.  Bring food you’ve grown or made — or buy some at the market — for a relaxed and sociable outdoor lunch.  This event is one of 12 local food celebrations in urban and rural communities across Scotland being held as part of the Blasda Food Feast (Blasda is gaelic for ‘tasty’). See www.blasda.org.uk for more.

See you there!

ToxMe at Portobello Organic Market, 3rd September

Come along at 10 am on Saturday 3 September to Brighton Park to celebrate the 1st anniversary of the Portobello Organic Market and also to take part in a major human art installation!

On Saturday 3rd September Portobello Organic Market will celebrate its first birthday.

At the same time in Brighton Park there will be a human art installation, ToxMe, created by visiting Italian artist Federico Calo’ in which everyone is invited to participate.  This event is part of Big Things on the Beach’s Public Art Fest, which takes place in Portobello from 27 August — 3 September — see www.bigthingsonthebeach.org.uk for full details.

Toxme, Portobello is a human installation created by Federico Calo’.  The idea is born from a very simple reality: every year, each one of us consumes almost six kilos of additives contained in food, but toxicity also includes noise, urban anger, environmental pollution, intellectual conditioning and the distortion of our personal right to exercise and express freely what we really think.  The aim of ToxMe is to bring this reality into public awareness through the medium of public art. Federico Calo’ works around Europe and directly involves local people as volunteers to realise his videos. Big Things on The Beach and Federico Calo’, are recruiting local volunteers who want to take part in this groundbreaking public event.

The juxtaposition of this event with the Organic Market will demonstrate, by providing a sharp contrast between ToxMe and the market, that we are not passive consumers of toxicity but that rather, through the Transition Movement and the local initiatives in Portobello designed to fight climate change, we are facing the challenge head-on to create a positive and life-affirming way of dealing with these issues.

This is a unique opportunity to get involved in a historic happening in Portobello and we hope you will join in.  To register your interest in this event, please e-mail enquiries@bigthingsonthebeach (put ‘ToxMe’ in the subject line).

See you there!

Exciting dates for your diary!

Saturday Aug 27th 2−30−4.30 — Local Currency Event

Join us at Old Parish Church Hall, Belfield Street, to discuss how to get an Edinburgh-wide local currency in place by this time next year (for more information, scroll down to the earlier post on the subject).

Saturday Sept 3rd — Next Organic Market in Brighton Park

This will be the 1st anniversary of the market and — as well as the wonderful stalls — will include:

- a series of brief inspiring films from 10.30 and an organic picnic (bring your own food or buy at the market) from 12.30 as PEDAL becomes one of 12 communities across Scotland hosting a ‘Blasta’ event celebrating Local Food. (Blasta is Gaelic for ‘tasty’).

- a Big Things On The Beach public art event from 10 called TOXME which you are invited to participate in, an event which highlights the toxic chemicals we are exposed to in our daily foods and lives.

Sunday Sept 4th — POD’s Portobello Village Fair (2−5)

As well as contributing to the light-hearted home grown vegetables competition, PEDAL will have  two stalls: one for the Orchard and bee keeping group, and one to enable people to ask questions about our proposed community-owned Turbine.

Saturday Sept 24th — Car Free Day (set off at 2)

- Meet at 2pm at the Cake Stand at the bottom of Marlborough Street to cycle along the Prom to the beach below the proposed Turbine site at Seafield, or join  us at the orchard anytime after 10 for the monthly work day and Equinox celebrations and then cycle down to join everyone for the 2pm start.

- This year kids are going to need to persuade their parents to help them dress up their bike beforehand, and we will be encouraging rowers, canoests and sailors to join us in demonstrating fossil fuel free travel! We may even stretch to a time trial: seeing how well a car, a bike, a skateboard, a skiff do racing against each other if none of them are fossil fueled!
