23 September 2007

Every year, people from around the world get together in the streets, intersections, and neighbourhood blocks to remind the world that there is an alternative to our car-dominated society.

This year PEDAL (Portobello Energy Descent and Land Reform) is organising a World Car-free Day event in Portobello.

* Air pollution, to which cars are the main contributors, is estimated to kill around 2000 people every year in Scotland.  In 2006, there were nearly 13,000 accidents in which someone was killed or injured: 2,594 people were recorded as seriously injured and the total number of people killed was 314. There were 344 children seriously injured, and 25 were killed.

Cars have a lot to answer for — they contributed to upwards of 2,000* deaths from accident and pollution in Scotland last year.  Transport also accounts for a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions.  At a time when everyone is concerned about climate change, Car Free Day will give us an up-beat glimpse of how things could be in Portobello, if we lived our lives with less reliance on our CO2 spouting menaces!

Far from being an environmental hair-shirt, this is great news for anyone who wants to live in a stronger, more vibrant community.  When we spend less time travelling, we can spend more time with our families and friends, and begin to create the kinds of shopping, work and leisure activities we enjoy closer to home too.

There’s never been a better time to get active - and spend the day in Porty!
